Our Three Year Journey

Wes Hall • April 1, 2025

It's a fun coincidence that NC Adapted Sports' "birthday" falls on April 1st, April Fool's Day! When Tony and I started NCAS, we were serious about our mission to transform the landscape of adapted sports in the Triangle Area. Looking back, the progress we've made is remarkable, exceeding even our initial expectations.

Thanks to incredible community support, NCAS has achieved significant milestones:

  1. Roger's Family NCAS Equipment Endowment: We've established this endowment to provide local grants to athletes dedicated to NC Adapted Sports.

  2. Wolves Youth Wheelchair Basketball Team: After a successful development season, the Wolves will officially join the Jr. National Wheelchair Basketball Association for the 2025-2026 season.

  3. Adapted Sports Day: This exciting event is happening on May 3rd at Bond Park in Cary, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. It's a reality thanks to collaboration with We Will Walk With You, Made4Me, YMCA of the Triangle Area, Catalyst Sports-Raleigh, Town of Cary, and Recreate Yourself.
  4. Participants can try adapted cycling, climbing, fishing, boccia, kayaking, and wheelchair basketball.
  5. There will also be vendors providing information about disability services.
  6. Join Us, This is a free event! – visit: https://www.ncadaptedsports.org/sports-day

  7. Duke Adapted Sports Experience: NCAS brought awareness to adapted sports for over 250 students from Duke School of Medicine's Physician Assistant, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Rec Therapy, and Nursing programs in February.

  8. CX-mas Cyclocross Race: Seven NCAS Adapted Cycling Athletes competed in the CX-mas Cyclocross Race at Dorothy Dix in December.

  9. CEO Position: The NCAS Board has approved my position as CEO to become a financially compensated role, signifying the organization's growth and commitment to professional leadership.

Looking Ahead

The board and advisory board have identified four key areas for NCAS's future growth:

  1. Financial Development: Securing resources to expand our impact.
  2. Outreach/Partnerships: Building strong relationships to reach more individuals.
  3. Program/Volunteer/Athlete Development: Enhancing our programs and fostering leadership within our community.
  4. Governance: Ensuring strong organizational structure and sustainability.

Here are just some of our short- and long-range goals:

  1. Establishing NC Adapted Sports as the leading adapted sports provider in the Triangle Area and beyond.
  2. Partnering with local healthcare systems to integrate NC Adapted Sports into patient care pathways.
  3. Continuously cultivating community partnerships to expand service opportunities.
  4. Developing athlete and volunteer programs that foster leadership and community.
  5. Establishing a regional youth wheelchair basketball league to increase playing opportunities.

We have ambitious plans, and with the continued support of the Triangle Area community, I am confident that NC Adapted Sports will achieve these impactful goals.

We are growing our board and advisory board team. if you are interested in becoming more involved in the NCAS movement, let’s start the conversation.

CEO and Co-Founder

North Carolina Adapted Sports

July 19, 2024
It is with a heavy heart that I share Tony Luparello, co-founder of North Carolina Adapted Sports and dear friend, passed away Friday, July 19th. Tony was the driving force that encouraged me to move forward in the creation of NC Adapted Sports. He kept me in check, opened my eyes to our success when I could not see it, and lived to make an impact on the lives of others with a physical disability. A few weeks back, he was demonstrating how to tackle a cross slope for a new athlete. The image in my head of him effortlessly taking on this obstacle, seizing the moment, and enjoying life will be one of my fondest memories. It is a lot to process that our weekly meetings will be no more, though I know he is pain-free and crushing some mountain cycle trails in heaven. Wes Hall, CEO and Co-Founder NCAS
